Filler Metal Classifications

Welding Rods, Electrodes, and Filler Metals are organized into a two tier system of Specification + Classification.

Filler Metal Specification

The primary category is the Specification, which groups filler metals into essentially comparable characteristics such as similar material types and welding processes.

Filler Metal Classification

The secondary category is the Classification, which specifies chemistry composition, and mechanical characteristics as well as information about the welding rod, electrode, or filler metals usability. Within the classification category there are mandatory classification designators, and at a minimum it is required to include that information to properly specify a filler metal. Depending on the application it may or may not be required to include the Non-Mandatory designators.

Filler Metal Procurement

When specifying filler metals on Welding Procedures, or for procurement, both the specification and classification should be used. For details on guidelines for procurement of welding rods, electrodes, filler metals, and flux reference AWS A5.01 or ASME SFA 5.01.

Filler Metal Governing Body

The American Welding Society took on the primary role of managing the welding rods, electrodes, filler metal, and flux specifications in 1969. ASME in cooperation with the AWS has endorsed the adoption and/or replication of the AWS A5 standards. ASME Section II Part C Specifications for Welding Rods, Electrodes, and Filler Metals is the standard that is published containing the adopted and endorsed AWS A5 specifications. The following image displays how the specification titles detail the relationship between ASME and AWS.

ASME includes the "SFA" prefix to the AWS specifications which stands for the following
